Gulf Shores with a toddler: beach mornings, condo naps, flag safety
Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are built for families. Soft white sand, condos right on the beach and short drives between everything make the Alabama coast easy with a toddler. Most days follow the same simple rhythm: beach in the morning, nap in the condo, pool or a short outing later.
This guide covers beach safety and flags, Gulf State Park, the zoo and other outings, where to stay so naps are easy, heat and hurricane season, and a sample day. Check the official Gulf Shores and Orange Beach sites for current rules and conditions.

- Calm beach mornings, Gulf State Park, the zoo

- Nap plan
- Back to a beachfront condo after lunch
- Season
- Hot summers; hurricane season runs June through November
Beach flags and rip currents
Beach flags are posted at public beaches and lifeguard stands. Green means low hazard, yellow means medium hazard, red means high hazard, and double red means the water is closed. In Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, entering the Gulf under double red flags is against city ordinance. A purple flag means dangerous marine life such as jellyfish.
Rip currents can form even on calm-looking days. With a toddler, stay in ankle- or knee-deep water within arm's reach, and swim near a lifeguard stand when one is staffed. No flag does not mean safe water.
Gulf State Park
- The beach pavilion has shade, picnic tables, restrooms and showers, which makes it an easy base with a toddler.
- The Gulf State Park Pier is a long, flat walk over the water. Toddlers like watching fishing and spotting fish and birds.
- Paved trails run through the park and are good for an early stroller walk or a bike with a child seat.
- The nature center and Lake Shelby give you a break from sand and salt water.
The zoo and other outings
The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is a small zoo that suits toddlers well. Paths are short, there are animal encounters, and you can see most of it in a morning.
In Orange Beach, The Wharf has shops, restaurants, a Ferris wheel and evening events. Waterville USA in Gulf Shores is a seasonal water park with a kids area. For a quieter outing, a pier, a harbor walk or a boardwalk at sunset is plenty for most toddlers.
Where to stay so naps work
A beachfront condo or house makes the whole trip easier. You can walk back for lunch and a nap, and one adult can stay on the balcony while the toddler sleeps. A kitchen helps with meals and snacks.
Ask about cribs, blackout curtains and elevators before you book. In large high-rise condos, a lower floor can save time waiting for elevators with a stroller. Pool areas with shallow sections are useful when the Gulf is rough.
Heat, sun and the season
Summer is hot and humid, and the sun on white sand is strong. Plan beach time for the morning and late afternoon, use a beach tent or umbrella, and bring a rash guard and sun hat. Afternoon storms are common in summer.
Hurricane season runs June through November. Watch the forecast, know your rental's cancellation policy, and consider travel insurance for late summer or early fall trips. Spring and early fall are often the most comfortable.
What to pack for a toddler beach trip
- A beach tent or umbrella, a rash guard, a sun hat and reef-safe sunscreen.
- Swim diapers, a small life vest or swim aid, and sand toys.
- A beach wagon or a stroller with wide wheels for the walk to the sand.
- Blackout material and a white noise machine for condo naps.

Head up before the hottest part of the day.
11:00 AM
Pool time
A short swim in a shallow pool to cool off.
12:00 PM

An easy lunch inside.
12:45 PM
NapNap
In the condo bedroom with the blinds down. One adult can sit on the balcony while they sleep.
3:30 PM
Gulf State Park
A short outing: the pier or a stroller walk on a park trail. Save the zoo for a morning, since it closes in the afternoon.
Stroller note: Park paths are stroller-friendly. Bring water and a fan.
5:30 PM
Early dinner
Eat before the dinner rush at a family-friendly spot.
6:45 PM
Sunset beach walk
A short walk at the water's edge before bed.
7:30 PM
Bath and bed
Rinse off sand and settle down.
Nap note
A beachfront condo is the easiest way to protect the nap. You can see the beach from the balcony while your child sleeps.
Stroller note
Regular strollers struggle on soft sand. A beach wagon or wide-wheel stroller works better, and a carrier is useful for boardwalks.
